MICROSOFT IMAGINE CUP 2008

Wave Energy, the team from KDU has reached the finals in the renown Microsoft Imagine Cup 2008 !  This was an amazing feat in itself given the theme ‘Sustainable Environment’ as it was not easy coming up with an idea to fit the theme.  The team members comprising of Ngan Seok Chern, Lum Yan Yan, Lim Lee Ting and Albert Sigit, had worked tirelessly to deliberate on a suitable project and it  had paid off.

The entry in the software design category came about when the team realized that they needed an idea that could be used today and tomorrow, using energy that is free and available.  Thus, was borne the idea of capturing and harnessing a new alternative source of energy to help reduce global warming by reducing pollution from power plants.  They then proceeded to find a solution and succeeded in converting radio waves captured with radio frequencies into energy as well as maintaining the environment at the same time. The solution proved to be successful as the team delightedly discovered that the energy could light up a bulb!  This has indeed paved a future for a new lifestyle for society! The team found the solution impactful as it can be used by anyone at any place as radio waves are to be found everywhere.

This idea was submitted on January 31st 2008 and had attracted attention to reach the semi-finals.  Microsoft representatives reviewed the idea and it attained a position in the finals as one of the six finalists.  The final presentation by all teams was held on May 15th 2008 . The winning prize was a trip to Paris to represent Malaysia.

Wave Energy managed to clinch third place, a first for KDU College, and this was a proud moment as it was  the only private college to be in the top three placing.  The team obtained cash prizes and its members are motivated to enter more competitions in the future.
